I think I’m pretty good with stats and information about veganism. If you ask me a question, generally I’ve got the argument in my head ready to go. But the one question I always struggle with is “But what do you eat?”. I struggle with this for two reasons, 1) because it’s such a bloody stupid question, and 2) because I eat, well, everything. Which is actually quite difficult to explain when someone asks, usually because the person asking can’t picture a meal without meat taking center stage (gross).
However, this recipe I think is the perfect example of “what do you eat?”. Because actually no, it’s not just a pile of leaves. It’s PIZZA. One of the many items omnis believe you have to give up once you become a vegan. There are different ways to make vegan pizza, and these are either with or without cheese. Simple. I’m a firm believer of always having cheese on a pizza. It’s just not the same when you leave it off. We are now lucky enough to live in a time where vegan cheese is very easy to come across, and if you’re unlucky enough to not live somewhere that has it readily available, it’s also incredibly easy to make.
This pizza uses Miyoko’s mozzarella cheese, which worked really well. However, I know this isn’t always easy to come across. I’ve also tried the mozzarisella cheese when I was back in the UK, which, for my UK visitors, is the same cheese that Zizzis uses on their pizzas and it works really well. Finally (yes I’ve tried a lot of cheese), bio cheese shreds are really good too.
Anyway, if you’re ever going to make homemade pizza, you have to make the base from scratch. Buying pre-made pizza bases are just not the same, and it’s so satisfying to make the whole thing. It’s great fun for little ones too, especially when it comes to the pizza toppings.
For this one, I’ve put on caramelised onions, cherry tomatoes and garnished with fresh basil. Get creative with whatever pizza toppings you want though. I’d love to know what you try! Easy Vegan Homemade Pizza
- For the dough
- 350g plain flour
- 150ml lukewarm water
- 7g fast action yeast
- 6g salt
- 20ml olive oil
- For the pizza sauce
- 1 tin of diced tomatoes (400g)
- 3 cloves of garlic, minced
- Handful of basil
- Salt and pepper
- For the toppings
- Vegan cheese
- Any toppings you want
- A few basil leaves for garnish
- Step 1 Begin by making your dough. In a small bowl, mix together your yeast and water. Set aside for 5 minutes
- Step 2 In a large bowl, add your flour, salt, olive oil and yeast mixture.
- Step 3 Using an electric whisk with a dough hook, whisk for 7 to 8 minutes, until you can touch the dough without it sticking. You can also try the windowpane test, where you take a small piece of dough, stretch it and hold it up the the light. If you can see the light, the dough is ready. If you do not have an electric whisk with dough hooks, you can hand knead it, which will take a bit longer (about 10 – 12 minutes).
- Step 4 On your worktop, sprinkle a small amount of flour. Take your kneaded dough, place on your worktop, and shape into a ball (do this gently, it does not need to be perfect). Place it back into the bowl
- Step 5 Cover the bowl with cling film and leave until is has doubled in size (about an hour)
- Step 6 Whilst your dough is proving, make your pizza sauce. In a heavy bottomed saucepan over a medium heat, add your tinned tomatoes
- Step 7 Add in your minced garlic and seasoning
- Step 8 Stir and bring to the boil
- Step 9 Once boiling, reduce to a simmer for 10 minutes
- Step 10 Rip up your basil and add to your tomato sauce
- Step 11 If you prefer your sauce slightly chunky, leave it as it is. Otherwise, you can add your sauce to a blender and blitz until smooth
- Step 12 Set aside
- Step 13 Pre heat your oven to the highest temperate it has (if you want a crispy base, then leave your oven tray in the oven to heat up. Be aware it can be difficult to move your prepared pizza to the heated oven tray)
- Step 14 Once your dough is ready, take out of the bowl and place on your floured worktop. Cut your dough into as many pieces as you want. This recipe will make 2 large pizzas or 4 small ones but it depends on how big you want your pizzas to be
- Step 15 Roll your cut pieces of dough into balls
- Step 16 Once in a ball shape, take a rolling pin and roll into a flat round pizza shape
- Step 17 With a ladle, add your pizza sauce to your rolled dough
- Step 18 Add on whatever toppings you want
- Step 19 Repeat for the rest of the pizzas
- Step 20 Place in the oven and reduce the oven temperature to 180 degrees
- Step 21 Cook for 8 to 10 minutes, or until the dough is golden and crispy
- Step 22 Remove from the oven, top with fresh basil and serve!
